TOM BAKEY

TOM BAKEY is a 1979 graduate of Senior High School. As a Ram, Tom competed in Football, Basketball, and Baseball. He was a member of the 1979 State Basketball team. Tom also competed for the University of Dubuque, playing Football for the Spartans, before finishing his bachelor’s degree at UNI. Tom had an illustrious career as an ASA Softball player, earning several state titles. Tom worked in several different school districts around the state, including Oskaloosa, Saydel, and Valley-West Des Moines. Tom put together a softball dynasty at Valley, earning 5 state championships for the Valley Tigers.

ROBERT BEARDSLEY

ROBERT BEARDSLEY taught and coached at Dubuque Senior High School for 34 years. Robert coached Volleyball for the Rams from 1975 to 1984. During his tenure as Volleyball coach, he led the Rams to State Runner-Up finishes in 1975, 1977, 1978, and 1979. The Rams won State Championships in 1980 and 1983; the 1980 team finished undefeated on the way to the IGHSAU crown. In 2009, Robert was inducted into the IGHSAU Volleyball Hall of Fame. Robert also coached Boys Golf for the Rams for about 10 years, qualifying for state 4 times, with the highest finish of 4th place.

JOHN (JACK) HURLBURT

JOHN (JACK) HURLBURT is a 1954 graduate of Dubuque Senior High School. During his playing days, “Jack” participated in Football, Basketball, and Baseball, earning letters in all three sports. Jack was a member of the 1954 State Baseball Championship team for the Rams. He batted 0.500 during the summer season that year. Jack was a member of the highly successful football and basketball teams of 1953-54. He played basketball under the direction of Head Coach Johnny Orr.

BILL MCLENNAN

BILL MCLENNAN was a 1942 graduate of Dubuque Senior High School. During his high school days, Bill was a standout distance runner. He ran a school record time of 4:44.5 in the mile and was the track team captain in 1941. Following graduation, Bill joined many fellow classmates by serving his country during World War II, serving as a pilot. He became a private pilot following his service during WW II and was the private pilot for the Governor of Texas in 1994.

SHELLIE PFOHL

SHELLIE PFOHL is 1981 graduate of Dubuque Senior High School. Shellie was a four-sport standout in Volleyball, Basketball, Track, and Softball earning letters in all sports. Shellie went on to attend the University of Northern Iowa, playing on the UNI softball team, including a National Championship in 1982. Shellie Pfohl has been instrumental in promoting physical education, healthy lifestyles, and reducing obesity. Shellie Pfohl, was appointed by President Obama in February, 2010 as Executive Director of the President’s Council on Physical Fitness and Sports.

SIMEON WRIGHT

SIMEON WRIGHT is a 1993 graduate of Dubuque Senior High School. Simeon participated for four years with the Cross Country and Track teams for the Rams. In 1991, Simeon became a State Champion in Cross Country, a feat he defended in 1992 with a state cross country meet record at Veenker Golf Course. In 1993, Simeon was the Drake Relays 3200m Champion and held the school record at that distance. Simeon attended Iowa State University on a scholarship and earned All-American honors in 1996.
